Where we spend out money matters: buying books is a political act. Buying secondhand is a political act. I’m a huge advocate of buying secondhand, passing things along when you’re done with them, or borrowing things we need temporarily. We build the world with our decisions, and how we consume products is a big part of how our world will look. Sometimes, you just want to hold a new book in your hands, right? And it’s so easy to jump on Amazon and order a book via Prime. To be completely transparent, when you buy my book from Amazon, I make more money than if you shop elsewhere, because their royalties are higher.
However, I will always encourage folks to buy books anywhere else, even though it means a loss of about 20% of my profit. One way you can help authors is by buying the book directly from the author’s website. (I don’t have a direct check out set up yet, but I can offer discounts for bulk paperback purchases – reach out!)
To support my work, the most wonderful thing you can do is buy Meet Me at the Ruins through my Bookshop.org “storefront”, so I get a tiny referral bonus. (Bookshop.org’s royalties plus my bonus almost equal my Amazon royalties.) I’m happy wherever you get my book – Libby, Hoopla, Barnes and Noble, your local bookshop, Amazon – but Bookshop donates a portion of all sales to the local book store of your choice!
